US President Donald Trump‘s new series of sanctions against Cuba, a continuation of the six-decade-long American crusade against the socialist island state, has been condemned by the left-wing Palestinian resistance organisation, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), in unequivocal terms. PFLP condemned US sanctions on Cuba and claimed they will fail.

Apart from the existing sanctions on Cuba, Mr Trump’s government has imposed new sanctions on the Cuban leadership, accusing them of taking part in a “brutal crackdown” of protests in 2021.

The PFLP issued a statement saying it “condemns in the strongest terms the US decision to impose new sanctions on the Republic of Cuba, headed by Comrade President Miguel Díaz-Canel and a number of Cuban national leaders. It expresses its deep and unwavering solidarity with the President and all the honourable members of the revolutionary Cuban government. It affirms that Cuba will remain, despite all conspiracies, a beacon of freedom and an icon of the global revolution,” the PFLP said in the statement issued on Saturday, July 12th.

While the PFLP condemned the new US sanctions on Cuba, it said that these are the continuation of the American hostile policy towards the island nation.

The PFLP claimed that Cuba has to face Mr Trump’s wrath due to its principled position of solidarity towards the Palestinian people.

“The Front affirms that these sanctions represent a continuation of the US’s historical policies of hostility against Cuba and its glorious revolution, and a desperate attempt to bring the Cuban state to its knees because of its principled positions in support of oppressed peoples, foremost among them the Palestinian people,” the Marxist-Leninist organisation said in its statement.

The PFLP’s statement echoes the sentiments exhibited by Mr Díaz Canal.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), following the announcement by the US, the Cuban president wrote, “What bothers the US about #Cuba is its true independence, that transnational corporations don’t rule here, that we have free healthcare and education, that we don’t ask permission to condemn crimes like those committed by Israel and the US against the Palestinians.”

The PFLP has condemned these US sanctions against Cuba by labelling them as “terrorist and criminal”.

“The Front considers these sanctions to be terrorist and criminal, and part of the policies of siege and pressure pursued by American imperialism against anyone who refuses to submit to it or breaks from the colonial fold. These sanctions are another facet of the political and economic aggression against a courageous country that has chosen the path of dignity, sovereignty, and independence,” the left-wing organisation, categorised as a terrorist by the West, mentioned.

Linking the US to the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza, the PFLP blamed it for its double standards and accused it of being responsible for the siege of Gaza, which resulted in massive starvation.

“The Front emphasises that the United States of America, which claims to defend human rights, is the last party entitled to speak about freedoms and the rights of the people. It is the primary and permanent sponsor of the genocide perpetrated against our Palestinian people by the Zionist entity,” the organisation said.

“It is a direct partner in all the crimes committed in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. It is the one imposing siege and starvation on entire peoples. It is the one igniting wars around the world, fueling them with internationally prohibited weapons, and combating every attempt at liberation or genuine resistance,” the PFLP asserted.

“The Front affirms that the primary objective of these American sanctions is to intimidate Cuba and attempt to undermine its internal stability, for no reason other than its support for just causes and its refusal to accept the hegemony of Washington and its tools. However, history has proven that Cuba neither submits nor breaks; rather, it grows stronger the more the aggression against it intensifies,” the resistance organisation claimed.

“Since the victory of its revolution under the leadership of internationalist leader Fidel Castro, Cuba has proven itself a living model of steadfastness in the face of American arrogance and a standard-bearer for oppressed peoples in their battle against colonialism and exploitation. Its political positions, most notably its steadfast support for Palestine and its rejection of the crimes of the occupation, demonstrate that Cuba is a humanitarian ally and an important partner in the struggle for resistance and liberation,” the PFLP said.

Meanwhile, the PFLP has also urged for a broader Arab and international solidarity campaign with Cuba in the face of the ongoing onslaughts on it.

“The Front also calls for the broadest Arab and international solidarity campaign with Cuba in the face of this new imperialist onslaught. It considers the sanctions a direct response to Cuba’s anti-Zionist and pro-Palestine stances,” the PFLP added.

“The Front affirms that all sanctions will fail, just as their predecessors did. Cuba will remain a free, independent, and proud state, and a source of inspiration for all revolutionary movements and experiences around the world,” the organisation concluded.
