Gujarat Police arrests eight over ‘objectionable posters’ against Modi

Gujarat police arrested eight people for allegedly putting up 'objectionable posters' against Narendra Modi.

Gujarat Police arrested eight in Gujarat for putting up alleged ‘objectionable posters’ against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, March 30th.

The allegedly objectionable posters, proclaiming “Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao” (Oust Modi and save India), were recovered by the Ahmedabad Police from different areas of Ahmedabad on Thursday. After that, the police probed on the incident of putting up these allegedly objectionable posters and, as a result, arrested eight people.

Registering a case against the arrested people, the police said that the alleged delinquents put up the posters in an “unlawful manner”.

Notably, the arrest came a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had launched a nationwide postering campaign against Modi. The AAP initiated this postering campaign against Modi after having accused the latter of subverting the federal structure of India. The AAP’s “Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao” postering campaign saw the posters printed in 11 languages such as English, Bengali, Oriya, Malayalam, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, Kannada, Hindi, Urdu and Gujarati.

Last week, thousands of posters against Modi appeared on the walls of the capital New Delhi, triggering a crackdown by Delhi police, in which six people were arrested, and 49 FIRs were registered.

After the latest arrest in Gujarat, the Gujarat AAP chief Isudan Gadhvi allegedly remarked that the arrest of the people for putting up the posters indicates how the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is running a dictatorship, and the BJP is scared of the opposition.

In a tweet, he wrote in Hindi, “Look at the dictatorship of the BJP! Aam Aadmi Party workers are detained by the police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) concerning the “Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao” posters. If this is not fear of Modi and the BJP, then what else? Try as hard as you want, Aam Aadmi Party workers will fight nonetheless.”
