NIA files three new chargesheets against PFI

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) continues to file chargesheets against the Popular Front of India (PFI). In the past three days, NIA filed three chargesheets against PFI for separate cases in three states of India.

News portal The Times of India tweeted on Friday, March 17th, that the NIA had filed a chargesheet on Thursday, March 16th, implicating the PFI in a case related to a terror module in Hyderabad, albeit the NIA is yet to announce it officially. In September 2022, an FIR was lodged against the PFI in this terror-related case.

On Tuesday, March 14th, the NIA tweeted that it had filed a chargesheet implicating PFI in a case of violent extremism in Rajasthan.

The NIA said that it had taken this step while probing into a September 2022 case which was related to the allegations of conspiracy.

The NIA alleged that the PFI aimed to radicalise innocent Muslim youth. It also alleged that the PFI had frequently organised training camps to achieve such an alleged motive. Besides, it was alleged in the NIA’s chargesheet that the PFI conducted training on arms and explosives at those camps.

Furthermore, on Wednesday, March 15th, various media reported that the NIA had filed a supplementary charge sheet implicating the PFI in communal violence in the Mominpur-Ekbalpur area of Kolkata.

In October 2022, the police arrested 41 people for committing violence in the Mominpur-Ekbalpur area, in which some police personnel were injured. The NIA, however, has not officially said anything about the filing of the chargesheet in the Mominpur incident.

Notably, on 28 September 2022, the Union Government of India temporarily banned the PFI for five months for the latter’s alleged involvement in unlawful activities.
