Bangladesh court sentences six to death and four to life imprisonment for raping a student

A Bangladesh court sentenced six to death and four to life imprisonment for raping a college student in Rajshahi in 2012. The verdict was delivered by Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Natore Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in the presence of six out of 11 charge-sheeted accused.

The convicts sentenced to death are Sabbir Ahmed (30) of Dhanaidah village and Rezaunul Haque (31) of Jamai Dighi village under Baraigram subdistrict, Nazmul Islam (31) of Nachiarkandi village, Rajibul Hasan (30) of Mohishmari village, Ripon Ali (31) of Debottar village, and Shahidul Islam (40) of Sihabpur village under Singra subdistrict, Natore district of Rajshahi division.

Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Monirul Islam (30) of Mohishmari village, Ataul Islam (34), Khairul Islam (37), and Rezaul Karim (42) of Sihabpur village in Singra subdistrict of Natore.

Judge Rahim acquitted one of the accused named Nasir Hossain (31) as the charges against him were not proved beyond doubt, the public prosecutor, Anisur Rahman, informed the press. The convicts are also fined Tk 100,000 each and Judge Rahim directed the authorities to pay the money to the victim.

According to the prosecution, Sabbir developed a relationship with the victim, a resident of Natore, in 2012 and lured her to the neighbouring Kolom Mirzapur village in Singra subdistrict, where he and his accomplices raped the victim on October 19th 2012. The father of the victim filed a case against the 11 in the Singra Police Station. The chargesheet was filed in the Natore court on January 23rd 2023.
