From April 13th to 18th, the sixth China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE) is being held in Hainan Province, serving as a key platform to observe the evolution of China’s consumer market. As the first major exhibition in the opening year of the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2025–30), and the first event following the full island-wide expansion of the Hainan Free Trade Port, this year’s expo has attracted more than 3,400 brands from more than 60 countries and regions. Notably, international exhibitors account for 65% of participants, an increase of 20 percentage points from the previous session, underscoring the growing global appeal of China’s consumption market.

The expo highlights how supply and demand are changing and strengthens connections between domestic and international markets. It not only maps out the structural transformation of China’s consumption upgrade but also suggests its core driving forces, demonstrating the resilience and global influence of the Chinese consumer economy.

Window into consumption upgrade

China’s consumption is shifting from rapid scale expansion to a focus on quality and efficiency, a transformation clearly reflected in CICPE’s layout. The exhibition spans key sectors, including technological consumption, fashion and cultural trends, and health-oriented consumption, aligning closely with the country’s current consumer priorities.

Technological consumption has emerged as a major growth engine. The expo’s dedicated technology hall brings together leading global companies showcasing innovations in artificial intelligence, smart home ecosystems and the low-altitude economy. The debut of AI-integrated products, and even flying cars, illustrates how advanced technologies are becoming embedded in everyday life, meeting consumers’ rising expectations for convenience, intelligence and efficiency.

At the same time, the integration of quality and cultural consumption is becoming more pronounced. The event features both a “Domestic Trend Brands Area” that highlights distinctive Chinese products and a fully international “Global Characteristic Consumption Area”. From modernised intangible cultural heritage items to premium global brands, the displays reflect a maturing market in which consumers increasingly value both cultural identity and international quality standards.

Health and sustainability have also become central themes. The health consumption hall offers a wide range of wellness products and immersive experiences, encouraging healthier lifestyles. Meanwhile, exhibits such as new energy vehicles and eco-friendly home appliances align with global low-carbon trends, signalling a shift towards greener consumption patterns.

Driving forces: dual circulation and policy innovation

The transformation of China’s consumer market is underpinned by the interaction between domestic and international economic flows, as well as continuous policy innovation, both of which are prominently demonstrated at the CICPE.

On one side, the “bringing in” approach enhances domestic consumption vitality. Participation from guest countries and international exhibitors introduces new products and technologies, enriching supply and encouraging Chinese companies to innovate by benchmarking against global standards.

On the other side, the expo also promotes “going out”. The newly introduced area for domestic brands expanding overseas leverages the Hainan Free Trade Port’s policy advantages, helping Chinese companies access global markets. This positions China not only as a major consumer market but also as a stabilising force for global consumption growth.

Institutional support plays a crucial role. The Hainan Free Trade Port’s unique customs policies facilitate smoother domestic and international circulation. The development of a multi-tier duty-free system is extending tax-free consumption from specific tourist scenarios into everyday life. Innovations such as specialised duty-free zones for products like jewellery improve consumer experiences while lowering barriers to entry for international brands, thereby attracting greater foreign investment.

At both national and local levels, policy measures further support consumption upgrades. National initiatives aim to enhance the quality of durable goods consumption, while local programmes in Hainan create integrated consumption scenarios to unlock new growth opportunities. Efforts to optimise the consumption environment and ensure fair competition also provide a strong foundation for sustained development.

Future outlook: trends and global impact

The CICPE offers insight into the future direction of China’s consumer market. Three major trends are becoming increasingly clear: accelerated digital and intelligent transformation, improved alignment between supply and demand, and the widespread adoption of green and health-conscious consumption. Together, these trends are expected to drive further market upgrading and industrial restructuring.

On the global stage, China is transitioning from a major destination for consumption to a leader in shaping consumption trends. The significant presence of international brands at the CICPE reflects the expo’s global appeal. China’s vast market not only provides opportunities for global companies but also influences their innovation and product development strategies.

Through platforms such as the CICPE, China is contributing to global economic recovery by providing a stable and growing consumer base. While challenges remain, the vitality demonstrated at the expo suggests that these obstacles will gradually be overcome.

As a barometer of consumption trends, the CICPE captures China’s shift from quantity-driven growth to quality-focused development. Looking ahead, the country’s consumer market is poised to unlock further potential, supporting domestic economic expansion while playing an increasingly important role in global consumption recovery.
