Post-poll violence in Tripura at peak, international condemnation pours in

Post-poll violence in Tripura stirred a global outrage. The Portuguese Communist Party released a statement to decry the alleged BJP-sponsored violence in Tripura.

The Left Front has alleged that miscreants endorsed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been committing targeted violence in Tripura against the workers and supporters of the opposition parties since March 3rd when the result of the recently-concluded assembly election was announced.

In a series of tweets, the opposition leaders slammed the alleged BJP-sponsored violence in Tripura. The opposition leaders also alleged that the joint parliamentary delegates who went to investigate the violence in Tripura came under attack.

The Indian National Congress (INC) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] said that the parliamentary delegation comprising four Lok Sabha MPs, three Rajya Sabha MPs and local MLAs visited the violence-hit areas of Tripura.

The delegation allegedly encountered bitter sloganeering and harassment by the miscreants in Bishalgarh and Mohanpur. The parliamentary team also alleged that the police stood as a bystander and did nothing. Later, the team met the governor and expressed deep concerns about the violence in Tripura.

The incidents of violence against the opposition parties in Tripura have also stirred global outrage. Communist parties of different countries condemned the violence against the Left Front activists in Tripura.

Partido Comunista Portugues (PCP), the Communist Party of Portugal, decried the ongoing violence in Tripura, on March 8th.

A communique, published on the official website of the Communist Party of India (CPI), states, “the PCP condemns very strongly the terrorist action unleashed by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state of Tripura against the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, the other political forces and their militants and activists, following the recent elections that were held in this Indian state, where they have historically enjoyed great popular support.” (sic)

The newly-elected BJP government has not taken any stern measures to curb post-poll violence in Tripura. Although Chief Minister Manik Saha has reportedly informed the press that his government will not spare any perpetrator of violence, the opposition has alleged that no real action has been taken by the government.
